Edward Burtynsky
Biography
Edward Burtynsky is regarded as one of Canada's most distinguished photographers. His remarkable depictions of global industrial landscapes are in the collections of over fifty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, U.K., the Bibliotèque Nationale in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art and Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Mr. Burtynsky’s distinctions include the 2008 ICP Infinity Award, Art category, International Center of Photography, New York; 2008 Deutscher Fotobuchpreis (Quarries book); the 2005 TED Prize, The 2004 Outreach award at the Rencontres d’Arles, France, The Flying Elephant Fellowship and the prestigious Roloff Beny Book award. He is the subject of Manufactured Landscapes, an award winning documentary film by Canadian director Jennifer Baichwal. In 2007 he was awarded the title Officer of the Order of Canada, the country's highest civil award. His honorary degrees include: Doctor of Laws, from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Doctor of Fine Arts in Photography, Ryerson University, Toronto, and Doctor of Fine Arts, Monserrat College of Art, Massachusetts.
An active lecturer on photographic art, Mr. Burtynsky's past speaking engagements include the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dubai; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; The Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal; the Art Gallery of Ontario; the TED conference, Monterey, California; Idea City, Toronto; and Princeton University, New Jersey. His images have appeared in over 300 periodicals, among them: Art in America, The Smithsonian, Harper's Magazine, Flash Art, Portfolio, Art Forum, Saturday Night, Canadian Art, Playboy, GEO, the National Geographic Society and the New York Times.
