Shortlists

For each edition of the Prix Pictet, the independent Jury shortlists a number of photographers whose work they believe has both the artistic quality and the power to communicate vital messages to a global audience. The shortlisted photographers are invited to exhibit their work in a major portfolio exhibition, in order to enable the judges to assess the work in an exhibition context. In addition to the main prize, the Partners of Pictet & Cie invite one of the shortlisted photographers to complete the Commission, by undertaking a field trip to a region where the Bank is supporting a sustainability project related to the theme of the award.

For the first Prix Pictet, on the theme of Water, over 200 photographers from 43 countries were nominated and the Jury shortlisted 18 artists. This Shortlist was announced in the Financial Times Weekend Magazine on 12 July 2008, and the artists exhibited their work at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 22 October - 8 November 2008. Kofi Annan, the Honorary President of the Prix Pictet, awarded the first Prix Pictet to the Canadian photographer Benoit Aquin for his series, The Chinese Dust Bowl, and Bangladeshi photographer Munem Wasif was invited to complete the Water Commission. The Shortlist exhibition then went on to tour internationally, visiting Dubai, Thessaloniki, Hong Kong, Dresden, Eindhoven and Bonn.

For the second Prix Pictet, on the theme of Earth, there were entries from 270 photographers who submitted nearly 3,000 images in total. The Shortlist of 12 photographers was presented at the Rencontres d’Arles Festival on 9 July 2009, and was exhibited at the Passage de Retz Gallery, Paris, 22 October - 23 November 2009. The second Prix Pictet was awarded to Nadav Kander for his series, Yangtze: The Long River and Ed Kashi was invited to undertake the Earth Commission. The Shortlist exhibition toured internationally, visiting Thessaloniki, Dubai, Eindhoven, Gstaad, Dublin, Bonn, Moscow and Berlin.
