The Prix Pictet Commission is an annual invitation for a photographer, chosen from the Prix Pictet shortlist, to produce a series of images by visiting a region where Pictet & Cie are supporting a project related to the theme of the award.
For 2009, Pictet & Cie will support Azafady’s work in Madagascar. The images made for the Prix Pictet Earth Commission will be shown in London in early 2010. Azafady aims to eradicate poverty, suffering and environmental damage in Madagascar. Their mission is to alleviate extreme poverty and protect unique, biologically rich but greatly endangered forest environments in Madagascar by empowering some of the poorest people to establish for themselves sustainable livelihoods and improve their health and wellbeing.
For the Water Prix Pictet Commission, building on Pictet & Cie’s support for WaterAid’s work in Bangladesh, the shortlisted artist Munem Wasif was commissioned to visit the Satkhira region of south-west Bangladesh where WaterAid were about to introduce water and sanitation facilities to the area of Shyamnagar Upazila. The result of Wasif´s 2008 commission was a powerful series of photographs, Salt Water Tears: Lives Left Behind in Satkhira, Bangladesh that were first shown in London in March 2009, and subsequently exhibited in Dresden and Geneva.
