As part of the 42nd edition of Les Rencontres d’Arles there will be a Prix Pictet special presentation at the Théâtre Antique on 4 July 2012. As well as a presentation of the Growth Shortlist there will be an extended multimedia presentation by Mitch Epstein of his Prix Pictet winning series American Power. Also during the evening the theme of the fourth Prix Pictet will be unveiled.
Beginning in 2003 and spanning five years and twenty-five states, Epstein’s American Power examines energy production and consumption in the United States and how they have become manifest in the country’s landscape. Epstein’s presentation will include an original score performed live by the renowned cellist Erik Friedlander. Friedlander’s mixture of classical and contemporary styles – deeply rooted, in part, in the American vernacular – enters into a conversation with Epstein’s photographs and commentary to haunting effect.
Prix Pictet screening, Les Rencontres d’Arles, Théâtre Antique, 22.15, 7 July 2011.
